Every morning, I play a game with my father.
He goes knock knock on my door
and I pretend to be asleep
till he gets right next to the bed.
And my papa, he tells me, “I love you.”
But what happens when, one day, that “knock knock” doesn’t come? This powerful and inspiring book shows the love that an absent parent can leave behind, and the strength that children find in themselves as they grow up and follow their dreams.
“The ideal use of picture books, on some level, is to provide windows and mirrors for the kiddos. Mirrors that reflect their own worlds. Windows where they can see how other children live…The key to Knock Knock lies in the fact that Beaty’s tale is about an absent parent and not necessarily an incarcerated one. Lots of kids have one parent or another disappear on them. What Knock Knock is telling us is that even if they’re not there, you can grow up and become the man or woman you were meant to be…
“The art is the real kicker, of course…Then there’s how [Collier] chose to bring Beaty’s words to life. According to Collier, he took a real interest in this text when he saw Beaty perform it in a monologue. In this book he then tries to capture the spirit of the performance.” – Elizabeth Bird (School Library Journal)

“The one-man play was written and performed by Daniel Beaty to a standing ovation on the Copaken Stage. It was easy for the audience to see that Beaty was putting his heart and soul into every bit of dialogue and every song that he performed. The show began with him taking the stage and if you were close enough you could see a tear running down his cheek…Beaty changed characters, from the wife of Robeson, to Robeson, to a young Robeson and many others by use of voice, facial expression and body language. His timing was magnificent and did not waiver while changing from one character to another.” – Steve Wilson (Kansas City Theater Examiner)

Before the inspiring voices of Marian Anderson and Paul Robeson, there was an African-American tenor named Roland Hayes. This musical tale of faith, hope, and family traces a remarkable journey from rural Georgia to Carnegie Hall and Buckingham Palace.
